8:30 AM - Check-in
8:45 - Teams Announced. Begin strategizing.
9:00 - Race Begins at 50-yard line at north end of track (normal Andy Chan start line)
Here's the Cliff's Notes version:
1. Everyone starts together at Kezar track at 9:00 am.
2. There is no set route, no set distance, and no boundaries. To successfully complete the course, you must run to and check-in with volunteers stationed at all 4 peaks [Mt. Sutro, Twin Peaks (north and south peaks), and Mt. Davidson]. To view a couple of previously vetted routes, click here.
3. You are not required to run with your teammates (but are encouraged to run with someone if you don't know the shortcuts). Team scores are based on combined time/handicap so you are better off running as fast as you can.
4. Along the way, abide by all traffic and property laws. There are a lot of public shortcuts including trails, stairs, and paths that you can take, just don't go on any private property.
5. Return to the track. For the finish, you must cross the start line and then run one complete counter-clockwise lap around the track. Once you complete this lap, your time is recorded.
6. Similar to other pamaBEAST events, individual scoring is weighted based on whatever age/gender group you are in.
7. There is a team competition component to this event. It's a little more complicated, but in short you can improve your team score with optional bonus laps before your final teammate finishes. This also means if you don't want to complete all 4 peaks, you can still contribute points at the track. Teams are 3-person so if you have 2 friends you want to team up with let us know. Otherwise, we'll put the teams together race day morning.
Explanation on Scoring Formulas:
Team BEAST Index = Total combined team time (seconds) / Total Team Handicap
where Total Team Handicap = (Total combined age + (15 x Number of Females) + Total combined bonus laps + Total combined other bonus (riddle answers + predicted time winner bonus)) * Peak Points (1/2 point each for Twin Peaks and Mt. Sutro and 1 point for Mt. Davidson).
Individual BEAST Index = Time (seconds) / Individual Handicap
where Individual Handicap = Age + Gender Points (15 for female, 0 for male)
Course Records and Legends of Yesteryear: Male - Steve Lloyd - 50:23 (2015); Female - Monica Zhuang - 66:45 (2016); Fastest Stroller with Live Child - Steve + Kaia Lloyd - 1:49:20 (2014); Male BEAST Index - Theo Jones (2012) - 69.75; Female BEAST Index - Monica Zhuang (2016) - 70.26; Most Bonus Laps: Female - Fiona McCusker - 17 (2014), Male - Justin Mikecz - 39 (2014)
The 4-Peak Challenge is one of five (or more) annual, local, fun, low-key events in the pamaBEAST series, a series put on by the Pamakid Runners.
